Greening your office is important to employees. Here is a wish list of gifts that your employees will enjoy and will bring a gift of ‘Green’ to the office. It is a ‘Countdown to Christmas’ letter from an employee to her/his boss, and these are gifts that your employees would love any time of the year.
Dear Boss, Here is my Christmas Wish List
I know. There are so many of us, you have trouble buying us meaningful Christmas gifts that will make us feel good about being here and working together throughout the year. As your assistant, and eyes and ears, I have taken the liberty of compiling our Twelve Days of Christmas Wish List. These represent what we want to become a more sustainable organization in the way we work together. You can still take us all out to lunch and write us a little poem, but these are practical needs that aren’t without holiday magic.
12 More opportunities to walk and talk rather than sitting in meetings.
There’s a park across the street and on nice days, we need to get out and enjoy the weather. We can aim for once a month of fresh air and track the fresh thoughts and processes we have as a result, just to see if works.
11 Indoor plants to improve air quality.
They won’t die if they go unwatered for a long weekend. Christmas cacti are seasonal, but jade plants and aloes are nice too.
10 Embody Chairs for their ergonomic design and performance,
but mostly, George’s back has been aching and Jean’s wrists hurt by the end of the day. We think office furniture that supports their bodies better will help them stay healthy and feel good throughout the day.
9 Window treatments we can easily adjust.
The blinds on the windows are dusty and heavy so we don’t change their levels as often as we should throughout the day even though natural light improves everyone’s mood all the time. We hear window film works well to help with keeping the heat out in the summer and helps us from squinting at our computers through the day. Our office has such a great view, and we really like keeping the blinds open as much as possible.
8 Recycling boxes for around the office.
We’re not sending our bad copies, our misprints or junk mail out to be recycled and we feel guilty about it. Plus, there are the cans and bottles in the lunch room and the paper towels in the restrooms.
7 CRT legacy monitors still need to be replaced with LCD monitors.
We all need the sharper resolution and will get the old ones to the e-waste recycling depot.
6 Place settings for kitchen.
Paper plates and Styrofoam take-away boxes are our great shame. We’ll being leftovers from dinner and re-heat them here to save the planet.
5 Gold rings! OK, I’m just kidding.
I put that in for seasonable appeal. Besides, you know what I really lack is not precious metals, but gem stones. Ethically mined, Northern Canadian diamonds are always a nice choice. Just in case.
4 Re-useable bags
for runs to the office supply store. We used too many plastic bags this year.
3 Fewer conferences!
We don’t need all the travel we’ve been doing. Let’s find more ways to teleconference, Skype, or Face-time instead of flying so many times a year.
2 Water bottles with filters each.
One to wash and one to use so we can re-fill from the tap instead of contributing to
1 LED light bulb for our desk lights.
We don’t use them often because we have so much natural light; but, when we do, we want to know we are not only saving energy. As well, we like the LED light bulbs because they don’t heat up like the old incandescent light bulbs do.
As far as holiday gifts go, these will go to all of us to you too! We’re all looking forward to working together in the new year. We’ll be greener when we get there.
With holiday greetings,
Your Assistant & Eyes and Ears
